History

Vortex started in either May or June of 2012[1] as a neighborhood named Sinnale, primarily managed by OneManWo1fPac and Diamond_Boss[2]. OneMan became interested in making it a PvP guild when he won some diamond PvP equipment. Sometime during this period, the guild was named dfd[3]. It was difficult to get players at the time due to the popularity of Arcane and several other PvP guilds. However, he found cockroach14, who went on to join the guild, along with several of his friends. It was at this point that the guild was renamed to Vortex. They were still a small guild, with approximately fifteen realms; however, they expanded significantly when Army of Darkness disbanded, leaving its members at loose ends. Tiny_Tiger2012, Dilsifprosif1, Ullabooyy, and MkMan2008 all joined Vortex after Army of Darkness disbanded[2].

On September 21, 2012, OneManWo1fPac started recruiting for the guild[4].

Starting on November 15th, 2012, Dilsifprosif1 held a Vortex PvP tournament[5]. The final match between UllaBooyy and SneakerHead (which Dilsif referred to as "Superbowl Sunday") was supposed to be held on February 14th, but was delayed until the 18th due to lack of an arena[6].

On December 3rd, 2012, OneManWo1fPac announced that Vortex would be moving their main base from Old Vortex to what would become New Vortex[7]. The majority of the realms were disbanded; however, some were kept, including the Vortex Triple Skelly Grinder.

On December 19th, 2012, Legit_Neymar announced[8] a Vortex PVP Youtube series[9]. Lightbulbs criticized the series on his forum account adiosToreador[10]. The first posted videos have since been deleted; however, several videos remain.

After causing much controversy, OneManWo1fPac stepped down as leader of Vortex on December 30, 2012, appointing cockroach14 as guild owner, cubeguy314 as co-owner, and guige1 as secretary. It was at this time that Vortex ceased to offically be a PvP guild as a result of the conflict resulting from it. However, OneMan remained a member of Vortex[11] until his ban the following January for rudeness[12] following Bain using his alt PacmanGEN to harass OneMan[13][14], and OneMan's subsequent choice to leave the server in February[15].

In January 2013, Vortex formed an alliance with Wizards of Goof[16]. The alliance was not primarily PvP-based, but rather a friendship between the two guilds. As a result, a number of ex-Wizards have joined Vortex after leaving WOG.

On March 24th, 2013, cockroach14 instituted a strict rule against PvP logging[17]. It included an immediate kick for any PvP loggers in the guild, after which the only way to get back in (assuming that cockroach14 decided to permit such a player to rejoin the guild) was to pay a fee: 5K for the first offense, and 10K for the second. After the third offense, the player would be permanently barred from Vortex. Cubeguy314 and infamouspally, upset by the new rules, left Vortex to create their own guild, Akatsuki. After a short time, they resolved their differences and rejoined Vortex.

On November 6th, 2013, Legit_Neymar announced[18] that the series would be moving to a new channel[19]. The most recent video was posted on November 1st, 2013.

Vortex has had a history of conflict, particularly surrounding OneManWo1fPac and PvP. However, they have made efforts to fix this, with measures including OneMan's resignation[11] and the appointment of cubeguy314 as co-leader to take advantage of his civility and negotiation skills[21] to solve situations diplomatically.

In a forum poll held in November 2012, Vortex was ranked the third-best PvP guild on the server, receiving 13% of the vote[22]. Arcane took second place, and NTC took first.

Notable Properties

Like most major guilds, Vortex has a number of notable builds, cities, and plots that are particularly well-known, much-used, or representative of the guild.

The Vortex Triple Skelly Grinder

The Vortex Triple Skelly Grinder is an XP grinder located at [-575,4975], at the edge of the map. It was created by OneManWo1fPac and cockroach14[3] after he found three skeleton spawners in close vicinity to one another while mining[23].

The Grinder has had at least three different designs. The first was a stone brick design containing an enchanting room, a pool, a fireplace, a private storage room, and a Nether portal[24]. The entrance was a stone brick hole that dropped down into the pool. The Grinder itself was in the corner.

The second design was a Nether-themed design with the grinder in the center. It kept the enchanting room, the Nether portal, and the storage room, but removed the fireplace and replaced the pool entrance with a larger and more complex design of stairs and ladders. It also had a large decorative lava pool fenced off by Nether Brick Fence.

The third and current design is a Nether Brick and Iron Block-based design. It has a spacious main room containing brewing tables, decorations, furnaces, and a Strength II Beacon; a lobby; a lounge; a melon farm; another storage room in addition to the (neatened up) old one, accessible by lever; a special room for the grinder itself, anvils, chests, an Ender Chest, and a decorative lava wall; and a connected enchanting room with three enchanting tables that enchant at different levels. The grinder now contains a lever that can be used to activate or deactivate the spawners, as well as a suffocation machine designed to reduce the skeletons' health to half a heart to make grinding easier. It also contains a Mist Shelter that can be activated to prevent non-plot-members from reaching a player within the grinding area during The Mist.

There is a path of Ice directly from Nether Spawn to the Grinder's portal.

Following the announcement of Guild System 2.0, cockroach14 planned to sell the grinder to help obtain the 400,000 credits that would be necessary to re-form the guild; however, after credit donations and requests to keep it from Vortex members, he changed his mind.

The Vortex Spawn Realm and Main Tube Transit

Located at [-25,75], the Vortex Spawn Realm is a first-ring spawn realm owned by cockroach14. It also serves as the primary entrance to the MineRealm Tube Transit.

Xeros

Xeros (originally Crafting City) is a city located at [-3500,-2000] that was created and run by Legit_Neymar. While it is not officially a Vortex city, it is associated with the guild and owned by one of the guild's leaders. In addition, the majority of the members have been members of Vortex.

Xeros was first created in October 2012[25]. It was given the name "Crafting City" on October 22, as suggested by LeafWarrior254[26]. In May 2013, the name was changed to Xeros.[27].

Some of the past and present citizens of Xeros include Legit_Neymar, Dunder_Mifflin (previously bendrake57), RickTheRuler, Monster998 (previously x998monsterx), DragonSlayer155 (new name unknown), Grayskul427, WetFarts360 (previously JeffK2000), RoRoMelo (previously xxcrapperzxx), aidynn2001, Yemx8541, ZachHunt, Dilsifprosif1, Kriller1994 (new name unknown), Meowrocket, eplawsl, and Gamnrd[27].

Past and present leaders include Legit_Neymar, Eetrab, nickisbestpony, ayaboc (previously cobaya18), and Monster998.

Xeros is currently inactive, and mostly if not entirely public. However, the city has not been wiped, removed, or even significantly griefed.

Old Vortex

Old Vortex was the primary Vortex town before the creation of New Vortex. It was inconvenient due to being positioned on the edge of the map, as well as being on top of an ocean. It was built there due to the presence of the Vortex Triple Skelly Grinder. Much of it was destroyed in the 1.7.2 public land wipe[28], but some parts were preserved.

New Vortex

New Vortex is currently the primary Vortex town. It is located in the vicinity of [-2500,4600]. It was built due to the inconvenient location of Old Vortex.
